We recently went through a revision to the probe design and now we've gone through a similar revision to the signalscope. We talked with Outer Wilds creative director, Alex Beachum, about changes to one of the main player tools, the signalscope! Using Philip Nowell’s excellent cube-to-sphere mapping equations meant that I could just treat it like a cube, and then have the GPU do the work of warping it into a nice rounded shape, like so: A quad-sphere seemed the best solution, as that would be the easiest topology to work with. Thinking about the problem, I broke it down into an idea of having patches of different resolution stitched together into a sphere. So we needed a giant sphere that gave us detail where we needed it, and faded it out where we didn’t. But we couldn’t have that detail everywhere, as that would choke things to a crawl pretty quickly. We’d need to have it be a pretty high-resolution mesh, as you can jump down into the ocean in person, which makes the small waves just as important as the big ones. The first big stumbling block to achieving this was having the polygons to turn into waves. As such, I decided I wanted an ocean with real waves. Hidden under a thick layer of clouds lies an ocean planet, and I knew I wouldn’t be happy throwing some scrolling normal maps on a sphere and calling it a day. Since the start of the project, I knew the gas giant of Giant’s Deep would be a significant tech art challenge. They'll begin playing their instruments in unison and conjure an orb above the campfire. Our tech artist/programmer/wunerkind Logan discusses how we went about creating the ocean feel for Giant's Deep! Speak to every character surrounding the campfire and inform them that you are ready. Gather the mask of a Nomai to summon Solanum to the campfire. A Nomai spacecraft will then be revealed. Stack these skeletons on top of each other by using what you've learned about " quantum rules". Solanum - If you spoke to Solanum, she can be summoned to the campfire by finding the signal of Nomai skeletons pointing upward.Chert - Drum can be found by using a telescope to find it floating near amongst red stars.Riebeck - Banjo can be found inside a ruined building.Feldspar- Harmonica can be found on a tree stump surrounded by orange jellyfish.Gabbro - Trumpet can be found in a hammock amongst the trees. The Prisoner - Instrument can be found in an underground area after you extinguish all of the candles within.Accept and they will join the others with their instrument. They will ask to join the campfire if you speak to them. Meanwhile, if you intend to travel to the Reservoir with your artifact then you need to enter the Submerged Structure as described on the Reservoir page.Īfter you find The Prisoner's instrument they will stand a few feet away from the campfire. This will reveal a hidden path to one of the Ritual Rooms. Find the mural with a Saturn-like ringed planet and move the lanterns in front of the mural so it goes dark. Then once inside you'll see several murals. To locate the Ritual Rooms within these areas, find the corresponding building that has a green circle on its exterior. Ritual Rooms can be found in the River Lowlands, Cinder Isles, and Hidden Gorge. Now that you have an artifact, take it to any of the " Ritual Rooms" or the " Reservoir". Trade the Warp Core for the artifact, leaving the Warp Core behind. With your Warp Core in hand, find an artifact in either the " River Lowlands", " Hidden Gorge", or " Damaged Laboratory". A title card will appear explaining that you are the lone survivor before fading to black and rolling the game's credits.Īfter obtaining the Advanced Warp Core fly your ship back to The Stranger. Just remember that each of the Outer Wilds' loops is 22-minutes in length so make sure not to oversleep and miss the end of the world.īecause The Stranger moves out of the sun's blast radius you will survive the explosion.
